Eleanor war die erste Bloggerin, die ich im echten Leben kennen lernte. Wir haben vor ziemlich genau einem Jahr beide auf der Hochzeitsmesse TrauDich! ausgestellt. Viele von Euch kennen sicherlich e.m.papers – Designs für Papierprodukte und Einladungskarten zum selber drucken. Gerade eben läuft ihr erster e-Course, der im Januar 2014 in die zweite Runde geht: “get clear, get calm and get to work” – Projektmanagement und Organisation für Kreative. Eleanor kommt ursprünglich von der Westküste Amerikas und lebt schon lange in München. Ihre Erlebnisse in der bayerischen Hauptstadt hält sie als Wahlmünchnerin fest und stellt zum Beispiel die besten Viertel Münchens vor, nimmt uns mit auf die Wiesn oder gibt Tipps für Neuankömmlinge in der Stadt. Heute nimmt sie uns mit ins “gruselige” Amerika und hat ein kleines Freebie für Euch…

In the about fourteen years I’ve lived in Germany, I’ve seen Halloween go from a totally unknown event to a bit of a ‘thing’. Now I get at least two invitations to Halloween parties each year, and just the other day I noticed a Halloween costume window display at Kaufhof.

Halloween was one of my favorite things as a child. Coming up with a costume, carving a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern and going trick-or-treating.

Trick-or-treating was the best. You’d go from house to house, or any house that put a jack-o-lantern on the front porch, ring the bell and yell ‘Trick or treat!’. The door would open and a nice man or lady would drop candies into your sack. Some people really got into it, decorating their homes like haunted houses and playing scary music when they opened the door, often dressing like ghosts or ghouls themselves.

The term ‘trick-or-treat’ refers to the idea that if the people don’t give you a ‘treat’ (candy) you will ‘trick’ them, which could mean anything from wrapping all of their trees in toilet paper or throwing eggs at the house…but usually it never came to that.

I miss that part of Halloween, but I do still do a little decorating, and sometimes will even carve a jack-o-lantern and leave a basket of candy out for the neighbors kids in our has.
